Chuck has been talking about throwing the most badass birthday party ever for COMOPOLO in March. I think this sounds like a great fuckin' idea and a ton of fun.

We could convince the sideshow guys to let us throw it there, book some bands to play or a DJ or something. Drink a lot of PBR pitchers, make us look fucking sweet and give everyone a good time.

Here's the thread to put all your ideas. Let's throw a sweet party and make some serious noise about the best club to be a part of in Columbia.

Be creative, lets do it!

Same shirts so we're recognizable during said celebration.

Maybe a new design? I love the frog, but I'm sure a bunch of us have good ideas for something (I do not).

And what has been done in the past?

Once upon a time, we had Lez Bouge donate some wine, Haii Usagi played at the Blue Fugue and it was fun and we raised money.

i'm assigning homework:
in the next few months, think of local bands that will fill the bar and entertain large amounts of people. haii usagi is no more but they were perfect.
think of ways to keep the party awesome. raffles, door prices, afterparty spots etc. post thoughts here.

Fundraisers are for girl scouts. Ulterior motives ruin parties. A raffle is cool but someone should be able to come party and not have to give money to us to do so.

I'd much rather that we not require a door cover. I don't want people to have to pay to hang out with us. To me this is about promoting the club in a public way, not making money or turning people away because they don't want to give us 5 dollars...

But I'll do whatever everyone else wants to do.

I (and I think you were there too, Charlie, if memory serves) went to a "rave" at the haunted house next to Walt's. That'd be an interesting place. Haven't the foggiest who runs it. Other obvious ideas might be Sideshow, Eastside, cafe berlin. Hell, maybe we can rent out gumby's for a night. Or one of the ragtag theaters.

Charging money - at least a donation jar - is imperative because doing it to be altruistic is for organizations that can afford it. COMOPOLO is monetarily worth what our collective monetary worth is (read: not much). People don't mind throwing in for a good cause. And we're so damn cute and adorbs.

I agree with drew, a donation jar doesnt hurt anyone. We mention it briefly and leave it up to the people.

OR just ask sideshow if we can book some bands at their venue. Then we charge $3 at the door to see the bands, sideshow gets revenue from people drinking a SHIT TON, and we keep the cover charge. We just need some radical bands willing to donate their time to the least worthy cause ever!

Yeah this is exactly what we discussed today at polo. Charlie was going to ask about the possibility of using the neccropolis, although I think the concensus was on sideshow, Tim D think you could ask? What we really need to do is find some bands. Anybody have leads on tunes? Aaron mentioned a pop-punk-hairhole band. Last time we did this we got Al Holiday, more of the hippie crowd. Anybody know of a band like that? There was talk of maybe a DJ. What about Dom's band? Sorry just throwing out stuff we had talked about. Also there was a discussion about making this the after party for the pull-out and doing t-shirts for raffle prizes. Could we get some random prizes? How did we get wine last time?

I got the wine from Les Boug because Keturah (my old coworker) was kind of their rep at the fugue.. If we want wine that bad i can get bottles from the bar/paul! I'll brainstorm some music too!

I agree that a donation jar and raffle are both a great idea. If we can make a little cash unobtrusively then fuck yeah.

I just think we should focus on making this a public awareness thing rather than something that is about money. We don't need money... for anything. Fuck money.

I like the idea of a bar. I also like the idea of a good band with real instruments but those are hard to come by in Columbia so we can be flexible here. Sideshow sounds perfect, who would be our contact with them? I know Timmy and Colleen kind of know those dudes?

We should also think of entertaining shit to have there. Maybe make some big art things with a bunch of pictures of the club over the years. Maybe a projector with bike polo videos on it.

If there is anyway possible to get a hold of gold sprints that would be fuckin' RAD. This is my number 1 idea.

I'll ask sean if he could donate some shirts or hats for a raffle or giveaway of some sort.

I'll keep thinking.

We need money for the not-for-profit. We could use money to pay for tournament entry fees, this is what we did after a yard sale blitz in 2009. We could use the money to build up a loaner bike for newbies with the stipulation that it is only a loaner. If you want to fuck money, I'd suggest getting yourself tested and then move to a commune you GD hippie.

I believe having the party on the same weekend as the pull out would be a great idea. At polo yesterday we discussed doing the pull out on a saturday and then the party afterwards. If we do this, we can flier around town for both the tournament and the party, so if exposure is what we are looking for then people can see what the sport is about and how awesome the community aspect of polo can be.

I think Sideshow is probably the best option, but I'm not completely against Drew's idea of having it at Ragtag. If we could rent out the back room and show the highlights video from worlds last year and then show like Rad or Quicksilver or something that would be awesome. Then we could follow it up with a dance party and raffle off prizes during the dance party. But like i said, Sideshow is probably the best option.

For the raffle we should all talk to our places of work/friends and see what we could get. Charlie talk to Walts, Keaton talk to Klunk and maybe Black Sheep as well, Christian talk to Sparky's, Kathrine talk to Main Squeeze, Aimee talk to Top Ten, Nick talk to Fixcraft, Tim A talk to Tree and I'll talk to Gumby's. With our powers combined we could come up with some bitchin' stuff to give away. Also, John could talk to Digit about getting us some shirts to give to the people who sign up for the tournament, and if that works out, we could have like a $5 buy in to the pullout and that would easily cover shirts. With shirts we could also offer add space for the above mentioned companies so that they would be more willing to donate gift certificates or whatnot. Oh I almost forgot to mention, I'm talking to Marino about being a sponsor for the tournament and he seems into it. This tournament isn't big enough to ask for a full frame, but I think we could ask for some custom handlebars to raffle off.

For entertainment, there are honestly not a lot of bands at this time who have a lot of hype in como. So I'm thinking DJ/VJ would be the best. We could get Aimee's friend to DJ, I could also get Austin Goldberg (Marvin Gardens) and/or Jonathon Kane (not sure his dj name but he does dirty disco some times). Also, my friend Ramon does VJ stuff at Dirty Disco so I could get him to do some VJing for the night. If I talk to him now, I bet he could come up with some sick bike related videos (pulling clips from old movies and maybe mr.do clips) so it could tie in with our bike party. Also, if we did Sideshow, we could do DJ in the main room and karaoke in the VIP room. Sideshow has never done karaoke before so just that could bring in new people, and seriously, who doesnt love some karaoke?

Further entertainment: I'm not sure what Gold Sprints are but I assume they are the same thing as KC Sprints. I think it would be awesome to have KC Sprints or Gold Sprints come out. KC Sprints in Lawrence was giving away free beer to riders while they were doing chug-a-beer sprints so people would love that. We could do Sprints in the VIP room at Sideshow for the first part of the night followed by karaoke in there. And we could give out prizes for the fastest time or something as well. They were a lot of fun in Lawrence and I'd love to do them again.

I think the most important thing we need to do is pick a date. I think that March 17th would work best since it's the last weekend before spring break starts (Spring break starts on the 24th). And it would be important to have it as late as possible so we can hope for warmer weather and get longer daylight hours.

Consider Sparky's already talked to. I can get six free scoop (each a $3 value) tokens and maybe a Sparky's patch to give away. That's really the extent of Sparky's giveaways.

I think March 17 is not the best though. People will have mid-terms/projects/finals/etc. due before spring break starts and are more likely to take it easy that weekend. Just my thought. Perhaps March 10 is better.

I'll talk to Kyle and the Ragtag folks about what it takes to reserve space. I know Ragtag isn't atop everybody's list of favorite bars, but they have bitchin' dance parties from time to time (i.e. T/F, Citizen Jane, Halloween, Videology). The only problem I foresee is the proximity to T/F. But I'll talk to Kyle nonetheless.

Sideshow sounds like the place with the most potential.

Who can contact the Garcias this week?

Also, I support tabling the non-profit stuff and organizing this party first.

the sooner we pick a day, the sooner we can start organizing and promoting it.

we can always use money for things. saying we don't need to make any money is simply not true. people are willing to pay a cover for a moderately good cause and for entertainment. roller derby bouts are $10 for godzilla's sake.

i think we should focus on this and non-profit incorporation concurrently. as we proceed with the paperwork, we will see what fees need to covered and could use fundraiser money for that.

my idea for a cover: if sideshow will accept, we collect a $3 cover, and give everyone a raffle ticket. polo players will get free cover and raffle tickets if they enter the tournament. raffle prizes could include extra tournament tshirts (further promoting sponsors both local or not), fixcraft or tree swag, GC's for free tune-ups at walts, etc. we could draw winners between bands, have band members get into it and so on.

i really like the idea of goldsprints in the other room. if we can convince KC sprints to come out, even if we pay him, it would make it awesome. kararoke seems less exciting and cycling specific to me...

as for bands, a hairhole affiliated band would get a certain crowd out, but i dont have as much contact with them as i used to. Moonrunner always draws a crowd, but i may be the only one who has ever been to one of their shows... i still think bands get people more excited to come party than DJs most of the time, provided they are the right bands..

as for the ragtag idea; showing a movie/clips and having a dance party after, i think it sounds great, but a different idea than a party at sideshow. if we go ahead with the sideshow idea and it goes well, we could use our funds and clout with sponsors to plan another party/fundraiser for later in the summer.

Yes, March 10 works.

Chuck, all good points. I say we focus on Sideshow, getting bands, events, prizes, etc. Ragtag could be a totally different event somewhere down the line that caters to a different crowd? Just a thought.

Everybody down to focus their energies on a March 10 party at Sideshow with music and stuff? If you don't speak up soon, your voice will probably go unheard when you complain about something on February 28.

John said it'll be no problem getting shirts with sponsors on the back, so we can use that info to hit up sponsors. All we need now is for sideshow to agree to letting us host it there and we will be good to go at setting things up!

The idea of Goldsprints seems unbelievably boring to me, especially if we play polo all day. You guys type too much. The end.

P.S. Karaoke is awesome.
P.S.S. Moonrunner, Let Lions, Landlocked...all crap bands.
P.S.S.S. Shut up, Christian.

Alright Timmy, then who the fuck do you want to hear play? COMO doesn't really have a glut of good bands to choose from. Gotta choose somebody and if we end up getting someone who stands up there with a macbook pressing play and making me listen to fucking deadmau5 or what have you, I'll burn the mother fucker down!!!!

I know you probably want a fugazi or prince cover band and I do too but those don't exist here!

Ben, there will be coaster fighting. I still have a decent amount of sideshow's coaster stash in my apartment as we speak. I've been taking good care of them too.

Im totally down with sideshow and having a band or dj. And can we please have karaoke at some point? I don't have a band to suggest since most bands that i like, or would recommend, are on the road or don't play anymore... Plus if we did karaoke yimyom, colleen, katherine and i will be the entertainment all night so we wouldn't even have to worry about a band! just sayin...

and my friend rachel (if we want a GOOD dj) uses vinyl and plays anything from earlier times to present, ranging from old country to old school hip hop to experimental 70s weirdness. She also LOVES punk from all eras and can shred it harder than anyone i've ever known. i think she'd be perfect for a polo party!

And krusey, she won't use a laptop or make you listen to a shitty dj! she's incredible and, i think, would be the BEST performer for our polo friends.

Zach, the date is not set yet. We're just in the planning stages at this point, but we're really pushing for March 10th. Once we hash out more details, we'll do our best to keep out-of-towners in the loop. For now, you'll just have to be patient.

I'm sure someone mentioned a raffle? If Marino does sponsor us with a frame we could raffle it. 5 bucks for a ticket. Maybe try and get the shops in town to put some extras with it or maybe something to raffle of completely separate.

I don't think I'd ask for a Marino frame. This tournament is too small to five away a frame. I'd feel more comfortable giving away a set of handlebars from Marino.

Yeah, Cory at Ragtag does Leif Lab bags. Last I asked him, he was "too busy" to make anything.

I'll catch him again and see if he can throw together a utility pouch or something.

It's funny, Cory was one of the original ComoPolo'ers. Have you ever seen Kremin's Ohio bag? Cory made those for Midwest 6 along with polo player buttons, I think Colleen still has one. That was right about the time he quit playing and got himself a extra-cycle instead. I might be the better person to ask him as I knew him in school as well...

I think a plan of action was discussed between Floppy, Kruse and Charlie last night. But I don't remember details because I was on Words with Friends intermittently.

Something like land a DJ for Friday March 9 at Sideshow and promote it.

We want John's DJ friend?

Someone step up and book a DJ. Not like, tell them that we might want them to play a show in march. SOMEONE JUST BOOK A GOOD DJ.

Johnathon, contact your friend. Aimee, contact your friend. Who cares, they press play on a macbook it doesn't matter just someone do it so we can tell Jesse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I think that is the date so far, judging by everyone's comments farther up in this thread.

This DJ at my office can't help me out. He doesn't have much pull with Sideshow and says he isn't established enough yet. Ugh.

So who else can we get for music?

He was fine with the date when I last talked with him. The date cant become official until we talk to him again with our plan. It might help for all of us to talk face to face, and get it done.

So the DJ at my office apparently had a change of heart.

He's DJ'd Sideshow before and he's DJing there tonight. He said Jesse has his contact info/knows him, so it looks we have our DJ squared away. The DJ's name is Franco.

My friend wants to VJ it, he said he loves doing themes so he'd be down to do a night full of bike related video work. So the talent is squared away, now we just need to get Jesse to give it the 100% okay so I can talk to KC Sprints about coming out and then talk to companies about giving donations for raffle drawings.

Okay sweet good job and I love the VJ idea. Colleen, verify a date with Jesse! The weekend we originally talked about is true/false so I'd rather not do it that weekend. We could move it back quite a ways if we wanted. Up until mid april when shit starts happening polo-wise.

by the way T/F is March 3rd 4th not 9th 10th. We will do it 9th 10th like we have been discussing. pushing it into april will conflict with bench minor and ladies army, too much shit for one month, it would risk us not having any attendees.
It also is SO annoying when our club settles on a date and then weeks later ONE person (kruse) says no and we change it.

Omg seriously blah blah blah. This is called a discussion. I don't know if you understand what that means but let me try to explain it to you: people raise concerns, and go back and forth talking about how these concerns can be handled. The particular concern that you decided to bitch about this time has ALREADY BEEN HANDLED. I ALREADY SAID OKAY THATS FINE. PLEASE REFER TO POST #65.

Honestly what is the point of your post? Just talk to jesse.

You know I loathe dubsteb. I thought we were down to our last resort.

So Jesse just needs to know that we have Shreddy Mercury DJing on Friday, March 9. His music will be accompanied by a VJ, too.

I have no contact info for Jesse.

Kruse, sorry to get your panties all twisted up in a wad. But to get it straight, you 'okay' ed us having it the same weekend as T/F in your #65 comment, as it was a response to Aaron's comment about it being awesome to have it on the same weekend for partaying sake, and I couldnt let you go on assuming T/F is March 10th when it is clearly not. Your 'Okay' was a vague one. And your topic of discussion, changing the date, was stupid.

You guys seem to have control of things, I am sure it would be fine if one you talked to Jesse. Just find sideshow on facebook and contact him through that. You guys have all the VJ info, it just might be easier instead of me being the middle man.

Idk what happened but I guess the first time people talked to Jesse they were misinformed or something because he is telling me that march 9th does not work because he is booked but we can have march 10th. So does polo tournament on Saturday followed by a party Saturday night sound good to people?

Last year we did fail to get a party to Sideshow. Not sure we burnt a bridge considering Jesse is at least responding to Aaron. I doubt there were hard feelings.

Back on track: It will be tougher to get people to Sideshow after the pullout. At the same time, last year the Pull Out ended with terrible weather. People were interested in calmer partying which led to Chicago, STL and a bunch of us drinking cheap Schlitz at Gumby's.

NEVERTHELESS, I'm still on board to plan/promote a show for SATURDAY MARCH 10. We all know plenty of people who go there or like to go there and word of mouth is worth something in this town, especially if it's about a party/drinking.
