FYI. I recently completed a census for NAH. It was mostly about club numbers. Feel free to ask me any questions about it.

Ha! No, but it did ask how many A, B, and C players there were. I entered zero for all.

I guess we need to have some sort of combine, that'll give us a good idea of what everyone's skillset is. Bench press, reps of 225lbs, timed 40yd dash and vertical jump. Start preparing.

Did it ask you only how many A, B and C players there are or did it ask you how many total members first and then ask you the A, B, C part?

NAH having a semi-accurate idea of how big our club is is something I view as important so if there was no questions answered on our numbers then can you just amend it and make us all C players or something?

Really? Cause thats whats gonna get us slots in tournaments. You should enter it properly...

Could you share the whole questionnaire they gave you, and your responses?

I don't believe in ranking folks individually. I feel it's unconstructive and I won't do it. All questions were answered appropriately, especially our numbers as a whole. Since the form is an online questionnaire, I'm not sure if I can reproduce it since the deadline for it's submittal has passed.

Hey princent, explain to me why answering the ABC part would have helped solidify slots for us in tourneys. I really am curious, and I assume you can go a little further on the subject.
And thanks.

I don't know the specifics, but in talking to ben chicago about podium, it sounds like they are trying to come up with a better way to pick teams for tourneys than the free-for-all thing, with slots filling up in 20 seconds and such.

A big part of that is a sort of census, so spots can be given out based on club size, like the house of reps. more players, more spots.

Re ABC.. I also think they are trying to take up less of the polo season, reduce NAH qualifiers to a few tourneys that are highly competitive, and leave more time for the classic opens and debautcherous tourneys. So a powerhouse like como might get an extra slot at a qualifier over a brand new club . Not everyone knows about COMO, so while midwest guys do, it' wouldn't hurt to represent our club accurately to everyone else for the those reasons

* This is in no way official

** We had problems this season getting into the tourneys we wanted, and we bitched a bunch about it. And now this process is a attempt to try and fix those problems. Why spit in its face when we were the ones calling for a better way??

good point vince. i wasn't particularly happy with the structure of this season of polo. the schedule was too top heavy, and registration was stressful. if this is a way to overcome that, i am interested in learning more.

i agree with tim fundamentally, stratification of players is counterproductive and without a definition of A/B/C players we can't accurately gauge them.

however it might be worth it to seek clarification or at least tell NAH why we did not rank our players.

Tell me a city, I'll tell you how many A/B/C players they have.

Just sayin'...

It's an arbitrary feeler gauge, anyway. It's not like anyone's going to hold you to it. I don't think it's out of line for NAH to ask what level of play is coming out of our town.

Lawrence and Como have about the same number of members. However, we are not the same club. 2 of our members got MVP at 2 of the biggest tournaments of the year (!!!!), 2 of our teams had podium finishes at 2 of the regional qualifiers. We fucking kick ass at polo.

With that question, I'm pretty sure NAH just intended to form a more accurate idea of where the regions stand skill-wise, so they can be reshaped to become more even and balanced. This will let everyone have a better chance at qualifying in their respective regional tournaments.

NAH is the socialist dictatorship that is intruding on my civil rights, and I'm the dumb sap that's completely compliant to my new overlords!

An arbitrary feeler is exactly what is needed. For Podium, all I need is an ABC ranking to run the best tourney that I can. Seriously, it makes or breaks the swiss rounds having a decent pre-rank... Without, lower ranked teams just get beat up, and higher ranked teams get bored.

It's not insulting to rank players I don't think. It helps everyone to play teams of similar skill level. How much fun would you have getting 5-0'd over an over?

Thanks for the clarification, I understand why ABC rankings could be important and I agree that it does suck to be put up against teams that will 5-0 you in 3 minutes (I know from experience). But what happens when people progress? Do we get more slots? Will there be a census every year? every 6 months? Shouldn't the census be nearer to the season and not right after so to gauge more properly, 'cause whats to say that a C player this month inst an A player come March of next year? Or that our club hasnt doubled in size or totally vanished?

It'll probably be taken on a regular basis. I think this one is just a preliminary thing. They might do a more official one later, where all the players actually register themselves as members of NAH under a specific club

This will most likely lead to a pro/am set up that exists in any other growing sport. There will be fewer 5-0 because A teams will no longer play C teams because C teams will no longer play in the A tournaments. That's the way the cookie crumbles!

We'll have to wait and see. I can see myself not going to NAH tournaments depending on how all this shit is organized. It's just not worth the worry.

Where is this questionnaire? STL has filled out no such online info.

We're running off-the-grid, right now.

Hello Club Reps,

We need your help to spread the word. Calgary has just allowed all top 12 teams to register for the North American Championships (not just 1-8, and 9-12 in the wildcard)! Please let your players know.

The full story can be found here:

http://2011nahbpc.org/

Thank you,
NAH Board of Directors
